Ticks on Labradors: Prevention and Treatment

Ticks in Labrador in the spring: Prevention and Treatment

From the beginning of spring to the late autumn, you need to monitor your Labrador carefully every day. During this period ticks are very active. They usually sit in grass and shrubs and jump on passing Labradors. Ticks bite into the skin, suck blood and, thus, increase in size. Ticks usually stick to the head, neck, between the shoulder blades, and in the groin area.

Prevention and Care

Each responsible owner should treat his Labrador with effective anti-tick agents at least once a month. Tick collars can be used, but as rare as possible. Such collars are chemically treated, so ticks cannot stick to the dog’s skin. Besides, after each walk, it is necessary to examine the dog for ticks. This recommendation is mandatory after each walking with a dog in the forest or the fields.

How to cure a Labrador of ticks?

If you find a tick at the Labrador, you can get rid of it at home. It is necessary to drip sunflower oil on a tick. Then use tweezers or fingers to unscrew it. Please note that it is necessary to unscrew the tick counterclockwise.

The tick should come out with the head, but this often does not work, otherwise, it can lead to inflammation. After you have got rid of the tick, it is necessary to treat the place with an antiseptic. It is also necessary to contact a veterinary clinic since ticks are carriers of a serious disease – piroplasmosis.

Your Labrador was bitten by a tick. What to do?

Below you will find simple and accurate instructions on how to get a tick out of a Labrador. If you find a tick on your dog, then remove it as soon as possible. Perform the following actions:

  • STEP 1: Remove the tick from your dog. To do this: fix the tweezers, thread or a special hook at the place of attachment of the parasite to the skin. Twist the tick in any direction until its nose is completely out of the skin. IMPORTANT! Never press on a tick. It can inject liquid with pathogens into the dog’s blood.
  • STEP 2: Treat the bite spot with alcohol, chlorhexidine, or iodine.
  • STEP 3: Watch for the well-being of your Labrador. If symptoms of infection appear, contact your veterinarian immediately.

The main symptoms of piroplasmosis:

  • High temperature (above 39° C);
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Diarrhea and vomiting;
  • Nosebleeds;
  • Dark urine;
  • Lethargy.

At the veterinarian, your dog should be vaccinated to destroy the virus. Be very careful! If you notice these symptoms, you should not immediately run to the vet clinic and get vaccinated.

It is better to first take tests to confirm this disease. It is a very powerful drug and if you vaccinate a healthy dog with piroplasmosis, then it will die in minutes.

Piroplasmosis in Labradors

Piroplasmosis is a deadly disease for Labradors caused by microorganisms that the tick injects into the dog’s blood when it is bitten. Piroplasmas parasitize in the blood, more precisely – in red blood cells, and destroy them.

The result is a malfunction in the internal organs of the dog. The disease develops rapidly and in most cases, without timely treatment, it will lead to the death of your dog.

At the same time, there can be not only piroplasmas inside the tick but also other parasites. A parasite bite can cause diseases such as anaplasmosis, borreliosis (Lyme disease), ehrlichiosis, etc.

Understanding Flea and Tick Control:

Thus, if you want your Labrador to live happily ever after, check your pet for ticks after each walk. Remember: regular prophylaxis will extend the life of your beloved pet and save you from expensive treatment.

You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince).
